Financial Planning: Saving, Investing and Protecting Your Money (Queens County)

A practical two session course to help older adults understand advisors, investment choices, risks, fees, and how to safeguard their savings. This course provides a practical, plain language overview of how older adults can save, invest, and protect their money with confidence. The focus is on helping you understand the financial strategies and products commonly used in retirement — and ensuring you know how to evaluate the advice you receive from financial professionals. Session 1: Foundations of Safe Saving and Investing • Choosing a financial advisor and understanding whether they act in your best interest • The impact of inflation on retirement income needs • Understanding annuities (buying your own pension) • Types of investments and their risks (e.g., fixed income vs. equities) • Why you need an emergency fund • How to safely invest money needed in the short term • Understanding interest paying securities Session 2: Investing for the Long Term • Defining risk and how it affects investment decisions • How the stock market works • Reasonable expectations for long term returns (FP Canada guidance) • Understanding stocks, mutual funds, and exchange traded funds • How investment fees work and how they affect returns • If time permits: avoiding scams; helping children or grandchildren This course provides general education only. The instructor does not sell investments or provide specific recommendations. RequirementsIt may be useful for you to review your investment statements beforehand to see what fees you paid last year; what percentage of your investments are allocated between cash, fixed income and equities; and whether your risk profile is rated as conservative, moderate or aggressive. Write down your questions and bring them with you, or send them to the instructor if invited. Cancel early if you cannot attend.

Course Facilitator

Blair Corkum

Blair Corkum is a Chartered Professional Accountant with 50 years of experience helping Islanders navigate tax and financial decisions. He provided hourly, fee-only financial planning — offering completely unbiased advice with no product sales or commissions. Until his recent retirement, Blair focused on one-time consultations with older adults, offering second opinions on financial plans and guidance on retirement, long-term care, tax, and estate matters. He also holds designations as a Registered Financial Planner (R.F.P.), Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Chartered Financial Divorce Specialist (Advanced Accreditation), Chartered Life Underwriter, and Certified Health Insurance Specialist. Blair is passionate about volunteering his time to deliver financial seminars for older adults, helping them make informed, confident decisions for their future. He promotes financial literacy through writing, community presentations, and advisory work with non-profit, federal, and provincial organizations.
